How to Clean Blue Crab

Catching and eating blue crabs is one of my favorite elements of any beach visit. If it has crab meat in it, we’ve definitely tried it. We boil them, grill them, and pluck the meat for dips, even She Crab Soup. We generally leave crabs whole for crab boils, but we clean them before cooking them for other cuisines. It’s quick and simple, and cleaned crab makes less of a mess on the table. Cleaning the crab also allows the flavors of the seasonings to permeate into the body meat while it cooks. It’s as simple as ripping off the back shell and spraying the insides with a hose to clean a crab. An oyster knife is the tool of choice for popping backs, but a butter knife or a flat screwdriver would suffice.

As soon as we retrieve the crabs from the trap or net, we immediately place them in an ice-filled cooler. The crabs will be numb and in a state of suspended animation after a half hour or so on ice, making cleaning them easy and humane. Crabs can stay on ice for up to two days if the water is drained. I usually unplug the cooler’s drain plug and place the opposite end against a wall or rock to allow any water that collects when the ice melts to drain. Maintain a constant supply of ice to prevent the crabs from re-warming. If the crab has already been cooked, wash it before cooking to eliminate any debris. The crab can be cooked whole or in chunks and served. Cooked crabs should be sliced in half lengthwise for easy access to the meat.

1. Pick a crab that is appropriate for your requirements. To find out what the minimum size limit for blue crabs is in your area, consult your local regulations. Female crab harvesting is likewise restricted or forbidden in some locations. Flipping blue crabs over and looking at their bellies is the best way to determine a male from a female. A male’s apron (the flap that runs from the back of the crab to the belly) will be lengthy and thin. The apron forms a broad triangle on a female crab’s body. Claw tips of female blue crabs are frequently brilliant red. Even if female crabs are not prohibited from being harvested, we usually discard them so that they can procreate.

2. Slide your oyster knife or other thin, flat tool under the crab’s shell, right in front of the back swimmeret fin/leg, at the soft spot.

3. Use the tool to pry the crab’s shell free, revealing the intestines and gills.

4. Spray the crab with a garden hose to remove the digestive tract and gill material, leaving it clean and free of debris.

5. After spraying the crab clean, all that will be left is the shell and delicious crab meat.

If you’re using a live crab, make sure you kill it first. Remove anything that isn’t flesh from the shell and pry it off. Pry the crab’s shell off, starting at the back. Remove abdomen by rinsing and prying it off. Cut it and hoard in the refrigerator.

Kill blue crabs before being cooked

Immersing a live crab with its stomach intact in boiling water is safe since the bacteria will be killed before they can cause any harm. Stun your catch for several minutes in ice water before cooking.

Is it OK to eat blue crab that hasn’t been cooked?

All crabs must be cooked (legs, whole crabs, and crab meat). It’s practically impossible to eat raw crab. Picking the meat out of the shell is fruitless due to the moisture content of the meat. Cleaning your crab is required before eating the meat. If your crab is alive, you’ll have to boil it to put it to sleep. As part of the cleaning process, you’ll have to remove the shell and guts as well. You can boil and eat your crab once it is cleaned.

Cook crabs at home

Grab crabs 1 at a time as indicated above and plunge the headlong in the boiling water, there is water, scoop it out and dispose of. Begin timing by covering the saucepan. Reduce heat to a low simmer.

Do you become ill after eating blue crab?

A dead blue crab should never be cooked or eaten. When a crab dies, bacteria spread and the meat becomes mushy and flavorless. It not only tastes bad, but it can also make people ill.

What vinegar do you use for crabs?

Are you a dipper, swiper, or sauce-maker when it comes to steamed crabs? The crab meat is removed from the shell using a dipper and then dropped into a bowl of liquid, commonly apple cider vinegar or melted butter. A swiper quickly scrapes the crab meat over the clinging pieces of seasoning.

When it comes to crab, how can you determine if it’s nasty or not?

If the meat smells sour, rotten, or bitter, it’s gone bad and shouldn’t be eaten. Spoiled crabs can also have a fishy or rotten odour, so use your nose to determine whether you can eat a cooked crab.
