His gang, the Greasers, live on one side of town, while the Socs (short for Socials), live on the other side. He wants to explore new places before he is forced to take sides in the feud between these two groups.

  • The night before Ponyboy ran away from home, he had an argument with his oldest brother Darry about whether or not he should quit school and get a job. The story indicates that Darry was pushing Ponyboy too hard in school, which may have also contributed to Ponyboy’s decision to run away

  • When Ponyboy runs away from home, Darry tries to stop him, but he can’t. Sodapop tells him that it’s alright, and to just let Ponyboy go. When Ponyboy is gone, Darry begins to realize how much he has grown up since their parents died and that they shouldn’t treat him like a baby anymore.
  • Ponyboy doesn’t want to go back home because he feels like he can’t stand the pressure. Even though he knows that they are only trying to show him how much they care about him, he still thinks that they are treating him like a baby.
