He then studied at the University of Birmingham from 1966 to 1969 and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1969 to 1972, where he won the Bancroft Gold Medal as the most promising actor of his year. While attending RADA, he met and became friends with Jeremy Brett.
